New service

A new Student Care Center at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk is a collaborative effort among funders and partners that involves employing a holistic approach to student success by bringing comprehensive medical services directly to students.

The center, funded by a three-year grant from Optima Health with medical services provided by Eastern Virginia Medical School, is the most recent accomplishment of an initiative called United for Children. Partners include United Way of South Hampton Roads, Norfolk Public Schools, Norfolk Department of Health and the city of Norfolk.

The center, which is the first of its kind in Hampton Roads and the second in Virginia, is designed to offer the services of a family physician’s office in a clinical space inside the school. Students now have access to medical services beyond the scope of what school nurses provide, including sports physicals and general health exams; referrals to specialists or other community services; and continuity of care for ongoing medical needs.

Additional health services will be provided with other community partners, according to a news release.

Expansion

INIT Innovations in Transportation Inc., a provider of intelligent transportation systems for public transit, will expand its presence in Chesapeake. The company will consolidate its administrative offices, two manufacturing firms and warehouse operations into a 70,000-square-foot facility, according to a news release.

GO-1 LLC, an affiliate of INIT, has signed a contract with the Chesapeake Economic Development Authority for eight acres of land in Oakbrooke Business and Technology Center to develop the new facility. Groundbreaking is scheduled for April 2016 and March 2017 is the targeted completion date.

The new office will house INIT’s staff including its engineering, development, sales, customer support, IT, project management and administrative departments. INIT’s North American operations are located in the Greenbrier Business District of Chesapeake, encompassing the company’s two manufacturing firms, Superior Quality Manufacturing LLC and Total Quality Assembly LLC.

Located at 250 W. Brambleton Ave., the facility has a 4,000-square-foot gym and offers comprehensive PT services including orthopedic and manual therapy as well as balance and fall prevention programs.

The location’s clinical director is TJ Stites, who received a degree in sports medicine from Radford University and a graduate degree in physical therapy from Old Dominion University. He also completed a doctorate in orthopedic and manual physical therapy from the Ola Grimsby Institute.

Power equipment manufacturer Stihl Inc. has awarded JLL property management of its 2600 International Pky. facility, International Industrial Center. JLL will also oversee the facility’s leasing.

Located on a 45-acre campus, the center totals 676,000 square feet of high bay warehouse and manufacturing space and includes 100,000 square feet of mezzanine space, 95,000 square feet of office space, 650 parking spaces plus 50 trailer parking spaces.

Built in 1987 and expanded in 1995, this Class A industrial center was previously a corporate headquarters and manufacturing site for Lilian Vernon. It is adjacent to Stihl’s headquarters at 536 Viking Drive.

Last month, 10 Bank of America employee volunteers partnered with representatives from Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg to help build a new home, including installing windows and new siding, for Newport News resident Wendy Saltzgiver. The construction of the home was part of a week-long build that took place in more than 60 U.S. communities and seven international cities.

In a prepared statement, Charlie Henderson, BoA Hampton Roads market president, said, “Homeownership is a critical part of financial security and a cornerstone of thriving neighborhoods, but it is still hard to achieve for many residents throughout the Greater Peninsula, particularly low- and moderate-income families.”

Bank of America and Habitat have worked together helping families build a place to call home for 25 years.
