Awards & honors

Hampton Roads Transit has been awarded the LEED level of certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.

The award covers the new southside administration and bus maintenance campus at 509 E. 18th St. in Norfolk. The project, which opened in 2011, provides space for all southside bus maintenance, parking for the bus fleet, a refueling station, a body shop and space for administrative functions.

Among the many green design and construction features that positively affected the project was the reduction of potable water use by 45.7 percent from a calculated baseline design through the installation of low-flow urinals, lavatory faucets, showers and kitchen sinks and through the capture of rain water for use in bus-wash operations.

Two Virginia students are among the eight student members of Chartway Federal Credit Union and its divisions of HeritageWest and SouthWest Community who have received $3,000 each in academic aid.

For 26 years the Virginia Beach-based credit union's Directors' Memorial Scholarship program has annually awarded scholarships to deserving student members pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Students will tour businesses in a variety of industries and speak with community leaders. The goal is to reduce the migration of young local talent on the Peninsula by cultivating high school students who are leaders in their schools and communities.

Additional sponsorship opportunities by businesses are available, including the opportunity to sponsor a student for $250 and the opportunity to sponsor a leadership day for $1,000.
